Revision Surgery
Revision surgery bariatric is the revision or correction of a previous bariatric surgery (bariatric surgery) procedure. Bariatric surgery is a surgical treatment used to promote weight loss and manage obesity-related health problems in overweight or obese individuals.
However, in some cases, the previous bariatric surgery procedure does not produce the expected results or some complications may develop. In this case, revision surgery is a surgical intervention to correct or replace the bariatric surgery.
Revision surgery bariatric procedure can be performed to correct complications related to the previous surgery, to increase weight loss or to perform another bariatric procedure. For example, if weight loss after previous gastric bypass surgery is less than expected, revision surgery can be performed to realign the gastric bypass or to perform another bariatric procedure (e.g. gastric sleeve mucosectomy).
The revision surgery bariatric procedure may use different techniques depending on the type of surgery previously performed, complications and the individual patient’s condition. This surgical intervention can often be more complex and should be performed by an experienced bariatric surgeon.
Revision surgery can be an effective method to manage bariatric, obesity and promote weight loss, but it requires proper evaluation and counseling in all cases. Therefore, a person considering revision surgery should discuss the issue with a bariatric surgeon or health care professional.
Which Revision Surgeries Can Be Performed?
Bariatric revision surgeries can include a variety of procedures to correct or replace previous bariatric surgery. Which revision surgery is appropriate may vary depending on the type of previous surgery, complications and the individual patient’s condition. Here are some examples of bariatric revision surgeries:
1. Sleeve Gastrectomy Revision: Revision surgery may be considered if previous sleeve gastrectomy (gastric tube) surgery has resulted in insufficient weight loss or weight regain. In this case, methods such as gastric sleeve mucosectomy (removal of a smaller part of the gastric tube) or conversion to gastric bypass can be applied.
2. Gastric Bypass Revision: If weight loss is insufficient or complications develop after previous gastric bypass surgery, revision surgery may be required. In this case, revision of the gastric bypass, anastomosis (the connection between the stomach and intestines) rearrangement or other procedures may be performed.
3. Biliopancreatic Diversion Revision: Revision surgery may be considered if weight loss has been insufficient or complications have arisen after previous biliopancreatic diversion (BPD) surgery. In this case, procedures such as revision of BPD or conversion to Gastric Bypass may be performed.
4. Open or Laparoscopic Band Revision: If weight loss has been insufficient or complications have developed after previous open or laparoscopic gastric band surgery, removal of the band or conversion to another bariatric procedure may be considered.
5. Duodenal Switch Revision: If weight loss after previous duodenal switch (DS) surgery has been inadequate or complications have developed, revision surgery may be required. In this case, procedures such as revision of the DS or conversion to Gastric Bypass may be performed.
These are just some examples and each case may vary depending on the specific needs of the patient. Bariatric revision surgeries should be evaluated and planned by a specialized bariatric surgeon.
